Fire safety

Following the major fire at the Glasgow School of Art on Friday, I would like to remind all staff of the vital importance of good housekeeping and of fire doors in the containment of fire and smoke, and prevention of fire spread.

Please do not leave fire doors wedged open, and close fire doors if you find them wedged in an open position. Do not allow rubbish to accumulate in buildings, especially on fire escape routes, and do not store materials and equipment where they could obstruct escape.

If you come across a situation that you are concerned could be a risk to fire safety, please raise it as soon as possible with your building Area Fire Officer, in the first instance. Matters can also be escalated to the University Fire Safety Advisers based in Safety and Environmental Protection Services, if the risk appears serious.

We are undertaking a review of the technical systems and operational procedures in place at the University. This work will be completed as soon as possible.
