Glasgow University Muslim Students Association (GUMSA) are taking part in a nation-wide event called Islam Awareness Week which will be held from the 19 -25 February. Throughout the week, they aspire to strengthen relationships with other religions and cultural groups. This will be done by hosting a variety of social events, panel discussions with different faiths and their annual interfaith dinner. The ultimate goal is to promote equality, unity and diversity amongst both students and the general public, by engaging in friendly discussions and informing them about the faith. Additionally, it provides the opportunity to tackle questions and clear any misconceptions. GUMSA believe this is key in further developing the bonds within the community, as well as encouraging religious harmony and interfaith dialogue. The theme for this year is “Faith: Fear or Freedom?”

They have a jam-packed list of events:

Between Monday and Thursday, they will have an information stall running outside the main library between 10am and 4pm.

Additionally, on Tuesday (8:30-11:00) GUMSA are having their event “Chit Chat and Coffee” where they will provide a free breakfast at the stall.

Wednesday is another busy day, they will be hosting their Interactive Panel Discussion “Faith: Fear or Freedom?” in the Sir Charles Wilson building, lecture theatre. It takes place at 5:15pm with a range of distinguished panellists from a wide variety of religious backgrounds, who will be sharing their thoughts on highly important issues. This will be followed by a live Q&A session.

Thursday brings with it, the highly anticipated Annual Interfaith Dinner taking place in the Queen Margret Union at 6pm. They will be providing a free 3-course meal. As well as speakers, an exhibition and a great quiz on the night!

As the week comes to an end, there will be an open Friday Sermon in the Forehall at 1:30pm. As their finale for Islam Awareness Week 2018, GUMSA are hosting a panel discussion “My Journey to Islam” where a range of speakers will share their individual, heartfelt stories of how they came to find Islam. This is taking place in Boyd Orr building, LTA at 5:30pm.

It is definitely a week to remember, so be sure to check it out!
