Mass participation sleep out to tackle homelessness in Scotland

A number of teams and individuals across the University are preparing for a cold night out in the open on Saturday night when they take part in the fundraiser for the homeless, Sleep in the Park.

Last month, the Principal and SRC President leant their weight behind the mass participation sleep out to tackle homelessness in Scotland.

This year the event is taking place in four cities on one night - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen - on Saturday, 8 December. The Glasgow event is taking place at the Kelvingrove Bandstand.

Two thousand free places were made available to university students and staff. Normally there is a £50 registration fee to participate, but organiser Social Bite received a donation of £100,000 to pre-pay for 2,000 places for students and staff across the four cities. Whilst the ticket was free and participants didn't have to pay the registration fee, they still needed to commit to raising a minimum of £50 in fundraising to get their ticket.

Playing at the event across the four venues will be Amy Macdonald, KT Tunstall, Lulu, Frightened Rabbit, Kyle Falconer, Eddi Reader and many more. Sir Chris Hoy will be sleeping out in one of the cities and Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh will even be reading a bedtime story. The money raised will help bring over 800 people out of homelessness across Scotland.

Rachel Sandison, Executive Director of External Relations, is joining the Southpark Sleepers https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/southpark-sleepers whilst another of team of six is made up of a team of researchers studying Toxoplasma https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/university-of-glasgo

Good luck to them and everyone else at Kelvingrove on Saturday night.
