The former UK Ambassador to the European Union, Sir Ivan Rogers, will give the latest in a series of public lectures on Brexit on October 16th. A Policy Scotland event.
Policy Scotland at the University of Glasgow is delighted to announce that former UK Ambassador to the European Union, Sir Ivan Rogers, will give the latest in a series of public lectures on Brexit on Monday October 16.
The talk, “The History and Origins of Brexit” – which will take place in the University’s Sir Charles Wilson Building at 6pm – will focus on the trajectory of the UK’s relationship with Europe in recent decades, charting out the path which led to the eventual vote to Leave last summer.
As arguably the UK’s most qualified and knowledgeable expert on the internal machinations of the European Union and Britain’s relationship with Europe, Sir Ivan’s focus will be not on the recent past or the current state of negotiations but instead on providing an overview of the medium and long term forces which eventually led to the Brexit vote and the difficulties that have followed from the decision to leave.
Defining issue
He joins figures including Lord Kerr, David McAllister MEP and Michael Russell MSP in taking part in the Policy Scotland Brexit series of lectures. These have helped make the University of Glasgow the premier venue in Scotland for leading thinkers and experts to outline their views on what is clearly the defining issue in Scottish and UK politics.
Sir Ivan has served in a variety of senior roles under Prime Ministers from Tony Blair onwards, and his lecture promises to be a timely and fascinating look into the dynamics of the relationship with Europe and the tensions and circumstances which resulted in the UK’s vote to leave the EU.
