Published: 16 May 2017

A festschrift - a collection of writings published in honour of a highly-respected individual - is planned for August.

Image of Professor Allan MowatProfessor Allan Mowat, of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, is retiring. Allan started at the University as a medical student in 1970 and after a brief spell in Edinburgh, he has worked in Glasgow since 1981. In retirement, he will spend a short period as a visiting Fellow in Copenhagen, before planning some serious travelling and learning to play the piano!

Allan’s career has concentrated on how the intestinal immune system operates and he was one of the founders of the European Mucosal Immunology Group, who presented him with a lifetime achievement award last year at their meeting in Copenhagen. He has also served three terms as a Trustee of the British Society for Immunology. Amongst his scientific highlights is his single-author review in Nature Reviews Immunology, in 2003: Anatomical basis of tolerance and immunity to intestinal antigens. This has now had >1300 citations, a staggering achievement!
