First established in 1974, the Norie Miller Chair of General Practice is one of the earliest Chairs of General Practice in the UK so holds an important place in the development of UK academic general practice and primary care. It was gifted to the University by General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation Ltd. in memory of their late Governor Sir Stanley Norie Miller.

Professor Mair told MyGlasgow News: "I'm delighted and honoured to be appointed as the first female holder of the Norie Miller Chair in General Practice and will continue to be a tireless advocate of primary care research in Glasgow, nationally and internationally."

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, said: “In keeping with its prestige, there have been only two previous holders of the Chair: Professor Hamish Barbour in 1974 and Professor Graham Watt, in 1994. The appointment of Professor Frances Mair recognises her significant contribution within the field of primary care academia.”

Professor Jill Pell, Director of Institute added “This prestigious chair is recognition of Frances’ important contributions to primary care academia, especially our understanding of chronic diseases and multimorbidity. She is a great asset to the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, and well deserving of the Norie Miller Chair”.
