Groundings editorial appointments

Published: 9 October 2017

A fantastic opportunity for all students, who need no prior experience, just sheer determination and enthusiasm to make this years Groundings journal a success.

Dear students,

Groundings is an undergraduate journal in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and has been published by GU Dialectic Society since 2007. It provides a rare opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of Glasgow to participate in the process of editing and publishing an academic peer-reviewed journal. Senior positions will also assist our sister publication, Groundings Ancients, which showcases the best submissions from across the four ancient universities in Scotland. We are currently recruiting students for the following positions:

Editorial Board Member: Editorial Board Members are collectively responsible for selection of the annual theme for the journal; anonymous peer-review and selection of articles for publication; and the selection of the overall prize-winner. Individually, each Editorial Board Member is assigned to work one-to-one with an author to improve their article ahead of publication. All Editorial Board Members are also encouraged to take part in promoting the journal. There are ten positions available. A high standard of written English is expected of any applicant for this position.

Managing Editor: The Managing Editor coordinates the editorial processes of Groundings, from theme selection to anonymising all submissions, overseeing the one-to-one editorial process, and carrying out final pre-publication checks alongside the Editor-in-Chief. This role involves a large amount of organisational work, as well other ad hoc duties - including dealing with student queries, recruiting Advisory Board members, and contributing to the overall development and promotion of the journal.

Marketing Manager: The Marketing Manager is responsible for promoting the journal effectively across the four universities, (working for Groundings and sister publication, Groundings Ancients) assisting communication between the teams at each. Effectively working as a communications assistant, this is an important role, as it helps to ensure that the journal is running on time and meeting the agreed deadlines. This role welcomes a confident and sociable student, who is willing to promote the journal in innovative ways, such as through social media and public speaking.

Production Editor: The Production Editor is responsible for the layout and formatting of final-edit articles for both Groundings and Groundings Ancients, and liaises with the Editor-in-Chief, the Managing Editor, and the printers. They may also be tasked with securing any image permissions. Similar to other Editorial Board members, they also participate in the processes of selecting the annual theme, articles for publication, and the overall prize-winner. As Production Editor, good IT skills are essential, in particular, comfort in using programs such as Excel, Photoshop, and InDesign. Previous experience of production and layout work is desirable, but by no means essential.

N.B. The majority of Editorial Board work takes place in the second semester.

Participation in the Editorial Board of Groundings allows students the opportunity to be exposed to a wide variety of articles across many subjects, broadening their academic horizons. It can also improve a student’s own academic work and future employability; teamwork, critical analysis, and working to a deadline are all skills sought by graduate employers. Moreover, all editors will receive recognition for their work on their university transcript through the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).

We accept applications from all undergraduate students; please complete the application form appropriate to the position you wish to apply for (attached to email). The deadline for receipt of applications to arts-groundings@glasgow.ac.uk is 23:59 Friday 20th October.

There will be a Question and Answer session about Groundings on Monday the 9th October at 5pm in the Drawing Room at the GUU, which all are welcome to attend. Copies of previous volumes are available from the University of Glasgow Library and online at www.gla.ac.uk/groundings

I look forward to hearing from you,

Serena Ruberto
