Project will carry out essential repair work to exterior to increase building's lifespan
Work has begun on a programme of work to refurbish the exterior of the Boyd Orr Building.
The project will carry out essential repair work to the concrete shell of the building and attach aluminium panels, extending the lifespan and improving insulation.
The first stage is to install mast climbers, after which concrete repairs will be carried out. To compete the refurbishment, the building will be clad in approximately 2,500 panels.
During these works, all the existing single-glazed windows will be replaced with double-glazing, improving the building’s energy efficiency. All materials involved in the cladding, including insulation materials, have been tested and are A1 non-combustible.
Work is being sequenced over three phases, with the first – on the building’s north-east elevation – already underway. This summer work will begin on the north-west elevation and, finally, the south-west elevation in winter 2019. The project due to be completed in summer 2020.
Building users and staff and students located near the site may notice some additional drilling noise over the 72 week period. This will be most noticeable when the cladding supports are being fixed to the walls, ahead of the panels themselves being attached.
