Find out about events taking place across campus to mark International Women's Day.
International Women’s Day is 8 March 2015.
All around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.
The theme of this year’s IWD is ‘Make It Happen’ and across campus, events are being held to mark this day. Details of these events below:
Keynote speech by Professor Lesley Yellowlees
The event: A keynote talk by Professor Lesley Yellowlees, MBE BSc PhD FRSC FInstP FRSE, Vice Principal, University of Edinburgh.
Currently Head of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, Professor Yellowlees became the first woman President of the Royal Society of Chemistry in July 2012.
She was awarded an MBE in 2005 for services to science and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2012. Professor Yellowlees has a long-standing commitment to promoting the contribution of women to academic science and is a champion of gender equality in STEMM.
When: Thursday 5 March 2015 from 10am - 12pm.

Science Ceilidh
The event: ScienceGrrl Glasgow will hold the first University of Glasgow Science Ceilidh.
It will be an evening of science based ceilidh dances – with names such as Orcadian Strip the Double Helix and the Dashing White Blood Cell.
There will also be stand-up comedy from scientists with a Bright Club comedy set.
Special guest Dr Christine McCartney OBE will join the celebration to share her experience in building a successful career in science as a woman.
There will be a chance to win prizes in a raffle.
When: Saturday 7 March at 7pm.
Where: Glasgow Science Centre.

Successful Women at Glasgow (SWAG) speaker series - Sarah McCrory
The event: Sarah McCrory, director of Glasgow International, the renowned contemporary art festival will be giving a talk to end SWAG's first academic year. Sarah will be speaking about directing, curating and organising a large programme of events. For more details visit the Facebook event.

Women in Politics Panel
The event: Jackie Baillie MSP (Labour), Annabelle Goldie MSP (Conservative), and Katy Gordon (Lib Dem candidate) will be discussing some of the issues they have faced being female in a male-dominated public sphere. SNP have yet to confirm their representative. Visit the facebook event for more details and to post a question.

Women in Chess
The event: The SRC will be holding an introduction to chess workshop where we'll be going over the basic rules of the game and inviting women/non-binary persons to play a game or two. The proceedings will begin with a talk by Alison McLure of the Institute of Physics, who previously had a chess ranking of over 2000, about being female in a male-dominated game.

Vagina Monologues
The event: Vagina Monologues is a theatre production which includes a number of monologues read by women, and each monologue deals with a different aspect of feminine experience.
When: Friday 6 March 7pm.
Where: Queen Margaret Union.
