New staff get the chance to network

New staff members at the University got the chance to attend an early evening reception at the Hunterian Museum last week and network with colleagues. Human Resources and International Recruitment Marketing Co-ordinator, Monica Ugalde, reports.

On 26 September, the Human Resources Service hosted an event for new staff at the University, writes Monica Ugalde. The successful evening was attended by 78 new colleagues, more than half of whom brought their families along and enjoyed a networking reception in Scotland’s oldest museum, surrounded by its intriguing collection ranging from meteorites to mummies.Colleagues chatting at an event

The objective of the event was to support staff who recently relocated by helping them find like-minded peers to establish their own social networks within the university.  The Human Resources Service recognises the importance of helping newcomers share information and experiences as well as socialise, particularly as these new members of staff have relocated to Glasgow to join the University and are in the process of settling in a new city.

A highlight of the event was a welcome speech given by the Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Anton Muscatelli, who touched on his own experience of relocating to Glasgow from Italy and finding a convivial and friendly environment in which to thrive.  He wished new colleagues to have a similar experience launching a successful career at the University of Glasgow, echoing the introduction by host Christine Barr, Acting Human Resources Director.

After the event, the organisers received comments from attendees saying that they enjoyed the event, and felt proud to work for an organisation which goes to such efforts to make new colleagues feel welcome.

The Human Resources Service is looking to provide further support to staff that have recently joined the university by establishing social networks for staff, staff partners and offering parenting support resources.  If you would like to find out more about these new services, please email monica.ugalde@glasgow.ac.uk
