Friday the Thirteenth will have a lucky ring to it this December...it’s the date fixed for this year’s Christmas University staff party.

It’s the latest in a series of charity events started by Derek Johnston, Maintenance Services Supervisor with Estates and Buildings. Derek Johnston Cash for Kids

Last year’s party raised just over £4000 for the Cash for Kids charity.  This year’s event, to be held in the Glasgow University Union, will aim to raise funds for the Make a Wish Foundation, which seeks to bring a touch of magic to the lives of children with life-threatening conditions. Already, half of the 250 tickets have been sold.

Derek said: “Originally I decided to arrange a Christmas party for the Estates and Buildings staff in 2012. But the idea just grew and more and more people came forward to help and it turned into an event for all University staff.

“A colleague volunteered his blues band, we booked a disco and karaoke and had raffles and prizes. The GUU donated the hall for us to use and the University Printing Department helped with tickets and posters. We ended up raising quite a tidy sum for charity in the process.”

Once again, Derek is promising ‘guest appearances’ by a glittering array of superstars from the 70s, but won’t be drawn into giving details!

The event will run from 7 pm to 1 pm with a finger buffet supper served at about 9 pm. For more details and for tickets, contact Derek.Johnston@glasgow.ac.uk  or call 0141 330 3113.
