The recently launched mobile class timetable and room finder App appears to have been a great success. The University and the SRC let students know about the app on social media and the MyGlasgow portal. On Monday 23 September, the first day of teaching, 2000 students logged in. The App is available via to students and staff at: gla.ac.uk/timetable‌

On its first day of operation, the App was coping with 23,200 students, 111,781 meetings and combined entries for student/class/meeting/weeks totalling a staggering 3,266,951. Screen grab of timetable app

The project to create the App took shape at the start of this year, in response to student feedback.  Staff worked on a University-wide class timetable, created in one system with identical level of detail.  Underlying the App is data from various systems including Estates, Timetabling, MyCampus; all of this is combined with Google Maps and additional local directions gathered for the project.

A spokesperson for IT Services said: “Timetabling/scheduling lends itself particularly well to mobile delivery so that it can be checked while out-and-about. Students will have their personal schedules on their mobile devices but until now, they have been unable to see their University class timetable in the same way. It is not just for students – staff can use the same service.

“Timetables update in real-time so are up-to-the-minute. The App runs off the web so it is available on all devices, including PCs. Users can choose to view their timetable in the app or download/subscribe to the timetable in their personal calendars.”

The ability of the App to offer routes to classes is particularly important when thousands of new students are arriving every year and having to learn how to navigate around the campus.  The app includes maps and local campus directions to rooms.   Everyone, including the public, can use the maps and campus directions at gla.ac.uk/locations
