A team for the Glasgow University Union reached the semi-finals of the European Debating Championships in Manchester recently.

John McKeen and Duncan Crowe were one of three teams for the GUU competing in the competition and the only representatives to reach the semi-finals – the best performance of Glasgow since 2007.

Gavin Tulloch, GUU President, said: “It’s a pretty phenomenal achievement, and follows a few years of debating success, including winning the Scottish Mace last year and qualifying for the final rounds of the World Championships over Christmas.”

The competition, held between 18-24 August, featured 216 teams battling over nine rounds of debate on issues such as whether violent video games should be banned, or international aid budgets should be approved by popular referenda.

The winning team was Cambridge A. The other Glasgow teams were Nathan Paulson and Callum MacMaster, Heather Whiteside and Francesca Ruddy, and judges Gavin Todd, Molly McGrady and Chris Edgar.
