Dr Helen Wheadon, Non-Clinical Senior Lecturer Cancer Biologist (Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre), has just been awarded a research grant from The Dr Hadwen Trust.

A statement from the Trust said: “The Dr Hadwen Trust is absolutely delighted to award the University of Glasgow, a full DHT Grant for the first time since 2004. The standard of non-animal biomedical research continues to be impressively high and Dr Helen Wheadon’s stem cell research project is no exception. Dr Wheadon and her team will be investigating leukaemia in humans using patient’s own stem cells without the requirement for painful animal studies using high numbers of mice.

"Not only will she be using a human cell model containing the same disease sustaining mutations as the original patient, but  stem cells have the ability to produce a renewable source of the disease, thereby providing a more accurate disease model for drug screening. Congratulations again to Dr Wheadon, her team and the University of Glasgow on this £147,800 award.

"The Dr Hadwen Trust has just launched its call for the 2013 round of grant applications. We hope to receive many more applications from the University of Glasgow.”
