Six members of the University cleaning staff who took part in the Bupa Great Women's 10K event in Glasgow earlier this month are on course to raise more than £2000 for cancer charities, including the University Beatson Pebble appeal. With an additional friend and runner they formed "The Magnificent Seven".Cleaning staff who ran 10K for charity May 2013

The staff, whose ages range from 43 to 62, say they were motivated to take on the challenge by “inspirational” colleagues who have been coping with cancer.  They include University cleaner Yvonne Gillespie who passed away last year.

The six are: Lorraine McMahon who was team captain, Sandra Beaton, Ann Jamieson, Carmela Papa, Cathy Clark and Rosemary Allan.  The additional runner and fund-raiser was 62 year old Isabel Carroll. Lorraine McMahon (front in the team photo) said: “The Magnificent Seven excelled themselves on the big day, but one person stood out from the rest and that was Rosemary Allan. She is waiting for surgery on both her knees and struggled round the 10K course. But with her gutsy determination she made it over the finish line in two hours and nine minutes. We are all so proud of her.”

Neil Campbell, Director of Campus Services, said: “We are all very proud of the staff involved. It was a magnificent effort and they have succeeded in raising a significant sum for charity.”

The three charities that will benefit from the women’s efforts are: Maggie’s Centre, Macmillan Nurses and the Beatson Pebble Appeal.
