Come and spectate at the Scottish Boat Race – now finishing at the Riverside Museum

The 115th Scottish Boat Race between the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh will take place between 12.30-3pm on Saturday 25th May 2013 at the Clyde.  The event has now moved so the competition course runs for 2.6km from Broomielaw Quay to the finish line at the iconic Riverside Museum at Glasgow Harbour.

The event sees the two fierce rivals compete in coxed eight crews in 3 different categories; alumni crews, reserve crews and the 1st crews in both male and female disciplines.

The competition has been running since 1877, and is the second oldest boat race behind the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. In the 136 years of the event’s existence, only Two World Wars and occasions when the weather has been victorious has seen the race fail to take place. The move from downstream to the Glasgow Harbour region will see the event pass under four iconic Glasgow bridges, and provide the crews with a much straighter and faster course. Glasgow are the current cup holders in the men’s race, whilst Edinburgh University will defend their title in the women’s race.

The location of the course will allow for much greater spectator access, and the events taking place at the Riverside Museum promoting rowing and offering opportunities to try out indoor rowing will aim to raise the profile and awareness of rowing opportunities throughout the city and Scotland wide. The start area at Broomielaw Quay and the finish area at the Tall Ship outside the Riverside Museum will provide great spectator access to the event.
