University Services staff are helping a number of students who appear to be the victims of a scam linked to careers guidance.

Earlier this year representatives of a career guide company are believed to have been in the  area asking students to fill in survey forms. These appear to have been used to sign students up to services of which they were not made aware. Now those students have started to receive warning letters from debt recovery agencies saying they owe many hundreds of pounds.

Student Services staff and the University's security team are assisting those who have been targeted and also working with counterparts in higher education, trading standards officers and the police.

Through the SRC, students are being advised to be vigilant and to take care before divulging any personal information such as home or term-time contact details, bank account and credit card numbers. They are also being advised not to make payment before seeking advice and guidance.

Students who think they may have been misled by careers guidance agents are being advised to contact the student advice centre.
