University coach gets national recognition

The University of Glasgow Head Basketball Coach has been recognised for an outstanding contribution to coaching over the past 12 months. Kevin McQuade, who is also a former student at the University, was awarded basketballscotland Performance Coach of the Year Award for the West of Scotland.

The University of Glasgow Head Basketball Coach has been recognised for an outstanding contribution to coaching over the past 12 months.

Kevin McQuade, who is also a former student at the University, was awarded basketballscotland Performance Coach of the Year Award for the West of Scotland. The award recognises Kevin’s exceptional work over  the past 12 months in developing individuals as well as team performances at a National level within Scotland, as well as the University performances in their Inter-University league programme.Basketball coach

Kevin heads the basketball programme at the University, overseeing the three male teams as well as the other volunteer coaches assisting with the development and growth of basketball. The club itself has experienced a number of recent successes, as well as a large growth in participation numbers and representative teams. Kevin is also heavily involved with Glasgow’s professional basketball club, where he assists Head Coach, Sterling Davis.‌

The University Club has in recent years won the BUCS Trophy (British Universities & Colleges Sport) as well as gaining promotion to the BUCS Premier League and entering the National League in Scotland where they have made the play-offs every season since their entry into the Senior League.

The award was presented by basketballscotland Coach, Education & Development Manager Victoria Clark. basketballscotland’s Competitions & Events Manager said: “basketballscotland would like to congratulate Kevin on his award. Kevin has been a primary driving force behind Glasgow University making the transition to National League basketball and in his first year not only supported the Club administratively but was also their assistant coach.

"Following the Club's successful transition into the National League over two years, Kevin was appointed Head coach and in his first year as Head coach took them the final of the Scottish Cup, finished 3rd in the league and was knocked out of the Play-Offs in the semi Finals by the eventual winners."

Mark Huddleston, Sport Development Manager for the University’s Sport & Recreation Service, said: “Kevin has been a great asset to the basketball programme, heavily involved first as a student and now as a coach in driving forward its development for the past five years. This award highlights the fantastic job Kevin is doing and encompasses our ambitions at the University to further enhance the programme and athlete and coaching pathways within the sport”.
