Industrial action 3 December - message from The Principal

Published: 28 November 2013

As you may be aware, members of the UCU, UNISON, Unite and EIS trades unions have indicated that they will be taking strike action on Tuesday 3 December in a UK-wide dispute over pay.

Dear Colleague

As you may be aware members of the UCU, UNISON, Unite and EIS trades unions have indicated that they will be taking strike action on Tuesday 3 December in a UK-wide dispute over pay.

The University will operate as normal on this day with all classes scheduled and winter graduations proceeding as planned. The library will be open for self-service between 7.15am and 8pm on Tuesday 3rd, and will re-open for the usual opening hours of 7.15am-2am from Wednesday 4 December. Anyone who has books due back on 3 December will be able to return them on the 4th without extra charge.

Staff who are not members of UCU, UNISON, Unite or the EIS will be expected to come to work.

Students are being advised that they should attend any scheduled classes or tutorials. Should any students experience difficulty in submitting work that was due on Tuesday 3 December because of the industrial action it is reasonable that they be allowed an extra day to do so, with any deadline moved to Wednesday 4 December. As with the dispute on 31 October, your support for this would be appreciated.

The University very much regrets that the strike is taking place and would ask UCU, UNISON, Unite and EIS members to consider the situation fully before making a final decision on whether or not to join in with the action.
