The Campus Vision will see the University developing plans for the transformation of the entire Gilmorehill campus over the next decades.  It follows the successful acquisition of the site of the Western Infirmary bounded by Byres Road and Dumbarton Road.

Ann Allen, Director Estates and Buildings, said: “This is a unique opportunity for the University to create a campus for the future.

“So far we have undertaken two rounds of staff, student and public consultation.  We will be coming back in the early part of the new year to check that we have understood the feedback people have given us and perhaps to check in more detail on specific issues.

“A particular focus is looking at space and what future research and teaching spaces should look like. We are also doing detailed work on developing proposals for the Campus infrastructure, to make sure that new buildings have the services and facilities that will meet everyone’s future needs.”

The next major milestone for the project will be submitting a Campus Development Framework to Glasgow City Council.  Estates and Buildings say the local authority is encouraging the University to be visionary in its submissions. Before then, however, there will be a third round of engagement feedback and renewed consultation in March next year when we will report back on the final Campus Development Framework.

Nearly two thousand people completed a questionnaire during the second round of consultations in October.  Early analysis of the feedback suggests that there are several emerging priority topics when people are asked for their views on how the campus should evolve:

  • creating a safe environment for staff and students
  • creating new and maintaining existing buildings of character
  • having abundant trees and access to green space

A video, containing recently shot aerial footage of the University and the Western Infirmary site, has just been released.  You can watch it here:
