John’s recording, with the Dunedin Consort, was named as the Gramophone magazine recording of the month which featured the work extensively. BBC Music magazine also made the piece its recording of the month and described it as a landmark event.

The vision behind the recording was to recreate the liturgical context in which the Passion would have first been heard. A review published by the Guardian said: “Dunedin's new recording covers everything, sermon and all, and the impact on Bach's passion music is revelatory.”
