The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club, a new facility for postgraduate student and staff at the University, opened its doors for the first time on Friday 26 October.

Representing around £1 million worth of investment; the new club is furnished with the latest in hi-tech equipment, including a seminar room that can accommodate up to 50 people. The Club also has a café bar area as well as bespoke group study booths.

GPC 1The concept and business plan for the new club were developed jointly by the University and the Students’ Representative Council (GUSRC) over the last 18 months. The operation of the club will be student led, with management and control in the hands of GUSRC.

The event was well attended by staff of the University, with speeches by Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University and James Harrison, President of the Students’ Representative Council.

The great-grand nieces of Marion Gilchrist completed the launch event by the cutting of a ribbon in the colours of the suffragette movement, reflecting Marion’s commitment to and involvement in furthering the cause of universal suffrage.

The evening’s events included a performance by Bright Club Glasgow, a student led stand-up comedy group.  The evening launch was attended by over 100 postgraduate students and staff creating a great buzz about the club.

James Harrison, President of GUSRC, said “I am so thrilled to see the Gilchrist Postgraduate Club open its doors.  It provides a space for the postgraduate community that has been badly needed for several years.  The design, layout and catering in the club has been shaped by postgraduates for postgraduates, and it will lead the field in the country for provision of space for postgraduate students.”

GPC 2Professor Muscatelli said: ‘I am delighted that The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club will be launched today.  The University is committed to developing and supporting our Post Graduate community and to ensuring that we are able to offer it the best possible student experience.  This initiative, led by our students, provides a fantastic new facility and the opportunity for our PG students to meet, socialise and learn together.  I am sure it is going to be a tremendous asset and one that will enrich the PG experience at Glasgow.’
