Groundings, the peer-reviewed undergraduate journal based at the University, launched its fifth volume last week.

The publication is written, reviewed, edited and published by undergraduate students at the University and it offers students the chance to have a paper or article that they have written peer-reviewed and published in an academic format.

Groundings This year, nine articles were included in the magazine, including contributions from Philosophy, English Literature, Spanish and Archaeology students. Copies of the publication are sent to the University of Glasgow Library, the British Library and the National Library of Scotland.

Fourth year Politics and History student Frederick Richters won this year’s prize for best article for his submission, entitled: ‘Can terrorism ever be justified’. Frederick kindly donated his £100 winner’s prize back to Groundings with the wish that it be used to establish a prize at the Dialectic Parliamentary for best non-native speaker. The prize was donated by Professor Moignard, former Dean of Arts, and long-standing supporter of Groundings.

Alongside the student Editorial Board, ‘Groundings’ also has an Academic Advisory Board, consisting of Dr Steve Marritt, Lecturer in Medieval History and Chief Adviser of Studies; Professor Thomas Munck, Professor of Early Modern European History; Professor Elizabeth Moignard, Professor of Classical Art & Archaeology, and former Dean of Arts. In previous years the Academic Advisory Board has also been populated with Law, Theology and Classics scholars.

‘Groundings’ would like to thank The Chancellor's Fund and the SRC who have been invaluable in financially supporting the journal, with a new application for funding under review at the moment and commitments to future support for the expanded brief of Groundings being warmly received.
