A University of Glasgow postgraduate student has been accepted on to a prestigious ESRC internship programme

Ellie Conway, who is currently in her second year of working towards a PhD in Public Policy, has been awarded a place on the Economic Social and Research Council (ESRC) PhD Student Internship Scheme.

The scheme provides ESRC-funded PhD students with placements where they will help to develop policy and practice at public, private or voluntary sector organisations. Ellie’s three-month internship with the Scottish Government’s SurvivorScotland team will begin on Monday 5 September.

Her internship work will involve a literature review to help develop current understanding of effects, particularly on children, of the traumatic events such as natural and man-made disasters and mental and physical abuse. Ellie’s research will also examine the factors which can make some people more mentally resilient to effects of trauma than others.

Ellie, 44, said: “I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the ESRC PhD Student Internship Scheme and I’m looking forward to starting my work with the Scottish Government.

“I’m confident that working with public sector research professionals will be a valuable experience and I’m hoping to take away some new skills which will help me in completing my PhD research.”

Ellie completed an MA in Public Policy here in 2008 and won an ESRC scholarship to undertake a research masters degree followed by a PhD.

Ellie’s PhD research at the University focuses on the construction of domestic abuse as a social problem in Scotland, and explores the experiences of women with insecure immigration status in Glasgow who are subjected to violence from their husbands or partners.  She is currently completing her second year.  She expects to complete her PhD research by the end of 2012.
