Student-Led Opportunities
Clubs, Societies and Committees
Being involved in and or running a club or society can be a great way to develop skills such as teamwork and collaboration, communicating effectively to others, event planning, problem solving and decision making.
You can join or set up societies and clubs through:
Student Representative Council Clubs & Societies
Glasgow University Sports Association Sports Clubs
On top of this the Glasgow University Union (GUU) has a number of committees you can join. Have a look at their page under “Get Involved” HOME | Glasgow University Union
The Student Representative Council (SRC) also supports 4 student media outlets https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/opportunities/student-media/
Queen Margaret Union (QMU) has committees you can join if you want to get hands on making change. Different committees will support you to develop different skills so take a look here https://www.qmunion.org.uk/committees
Elected Positions
These positions allow you to develop numerous skills while improving the university experience for yourself and your peers. If you’re interested in improving your ability to communicate effectively to others, build arguments & interpretations and evaluate solutions and decisions, these are for you.
You can find opportunities to get involved in representation through the Student Representative Council - the recognised representative body for students registered at the University of Glasgow. This page has information on Class Reps, Council and Council Elections and Campaigns https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/representation/
There are also elected student positions through:
Glasgow University Union Annual Election Elections | GUUnion
Queen Margaret Union Annual Elections https://www.qmunion.org.uk/elections
Glasgow University Sports Association Council GUSA Council
Volunteering
Volunteering is another great experience you can use to develop skills. Look for opportunities that align with skills you want to develop or your future career path. Not sure what skills you want to develop? Check out our skills tools.
You can find a range of volunteering opportunities through Student Representative Council SRC Volunteering.
You can also get involved with being a Helper during Welcome week at the SRC Welcome Helping or GUU Freshers Helping 2025 | GUUnion. GUSA also recruit Welcome Helpers and QMU recruit Freshers Helpers so keep an eye out for these roles when they come up. This is a fantastic opportunity to have some fun, be part of a community and develop skills all in one.
