Professor Gwen van der Velden

Gwen works with national and international partners to enhance teaching and increase the national and international recognition of our teaching and our students and their contribution to society. Until April 2016, Gwen was Director of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at the University of Bath, where she established of a strong student engagement ethos, led research projects in student engagement and organisational change and engaged in a range of national policy activities.

 In her career spanning over twenty years, Gwen has led teams of academics and professional service staff on educational innovation, organisational restructuring, strategy development and partnership building. Gwen is a member of the HE Public Information Steering Group and the National Student Survey Steering Group, both of which advise the Higher Education Funding Council for England. She is a Steering Group member of ‘The Student Engagement Partnership’ in recognition of her leadership on student engagement in various national roles. Since 2015, Gwen has also been a reference group member of Australian Nationally Commissioned Research on Student Engagement at the University of Technology in Sydney.

Gwen has been a member of executive groups and advisory or policy development groups of various national organisations such as the UK’s Higher Education Academy, the Standing Conference for Academic Practice, the Joint Information Systems Committee, the Quality Assurance Agency and the Heads of Educational Development Group. Gwen also offers professional coaching opportunities for mid-career professional women in HE.

Gwen has ample international experience, having studied and worked as an educational developer at the Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) and undertaken a staff exchange with the University of Hyderabad (India) in 2012-2013. Benefitting from research project involvement in Australia and Spain and collaboration with the WIHEA’s sister academy at Monash University in Australia, Gwen enjoys the opportunity to learn from Higher Education Leaders globally.
