Provenance: Sir William Stirling Maxwell, 9th baronet, (1818-1878), art historian and collector:  bookplate printed in red with the monogram “WSM” and the mottoes “Gang forward”, “Poco a poco”, “I am ready” on front pastedown;  engraved book label “Emblems Keir” on rear pastedown;  Stirling Maxwell shelfmarks “23B” in pencil on rear pastedown and “39.1” and “K.1”  on verso of front free endpaper.
University of Glasgow:  Sir John Stirling Maxwell, 10th baronet, (1866-1956), Sir William's son, bequeathed a portion of the Stirling Maxwell library to the University of Glasgow Library in 1956 (received in 1958).
Binding: England, 19th-century brown goatskin decorated with double blind fillets;  Sir William Stirling Maxwell’s armorial stamp with mottoes “Gang forward” and “I am ready”  in gilt on front cover and his monogram in gilt “WMS” within a shield containing the same mottoes on rear cover;  gold-tooled spine title;  dark green endpapers;  red-edged leaves gilded (the gilding omitted on the fore-edge of leaves E6-G3 in order to distinguish the section of text beginning “Ars scribendi epistolas Iacobi. P.”);  binder’s stamp “Leighton, Brewer St” on verso of front free endpaper.   Size:  218 x 157 mm.

Annotations: Two-page bibliographical note by Sir William Stirling Maxwell tipped-in at front.

William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow:  Euing’s inventory number “No 34” in ink on second front flyleaf;  purchased from Knight 18 Apr. 1857 according to Euing’s acquisitions inventory (MS Euing 49, item 34);  an earlier Euing inventory number “97” in pencil on first front flyleaf.
University of Glasgow:  presented by Euing in 1872 according to University Library bookplate on front pastedown (which is pasted over what appears to be a book label).
Binding: England, 19th-century dark brown goatskin decorated with blind tooling;  gilt spine titling;  marbled endpapers;  gilt-edged leaves.   Size:  195 x 142 mm.
Leaf size: 189 x 134 mm.
Annotations: Occasional 16th-century marginal annotations in Latin (cropped by binder);  paragraph marks and other text dividers supplied in brown ink on A3r-A5v;  occasional manicules;  note in red ink taken from Dibdin’s 'Bibliotheca Spenceriana' tipped-in at front, on which is added in black ink the price “£8.18.6”.
