William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Letherland sale for £0.6.6 according to the annotated British Library copy of the Letherland sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 6 (2).
Binding: England, 18th-century gold-tooled red goatskin.  On both covers triple fillets form a frame and within the frame is an ornamental roll whose design includes two crowns and two coronets;  covers also have a lozenge-shaped centre-piece, made up of several individual tools including a thistle tool;  gold-tooled spine;  edges and turn-ins decorated with a roll;  gilt-edged leaves.  Restored and rebacked by D. Cockerell & Son, Jan. 1955;  original 18th-century flyleaves preserved;  new endpapers replacing marbled endpapers;  new goatskin spine, with portions of original spine feathered on;  Cockerell’s note tipped-in at end;  fragment of an 18th-century binder’s note also tipped-in at end.   Size:  203 x 148 mm.

Annotations: Traces of a number in ink at top inner corner of a1r and what appears to be an erased pencil number at top outer corner of same page;  the letter “n” in ink underlined on first front flyleaf.
