Variants: With title, date and woodcut printer’s device printed in red on 1/1r i.e. corresponding to ISTC’s state A.  Woodcuts 42 and 48 correctly numbered and woodcut 75 misnumbered “73” i.e. corresponding to ISTC’s state Bi.
Provenance: Joannes Grandus (17th century), of Avignon:  inscription with motto on 1/1r “Sp[iritu]s vbj vult Spirat Jo Grandus avenio”.
Robert Gray (fl. 1664-1722), Doctor of Medicine, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London 1664, Fellow 1687:  inscription on 1/1r “Ex libris Ro: Gray collegii medicorum Londinensium socii Anno 1702” and with his annotations on verso of front free endpaper and on 1/1v.
John Ratcliffe (1707-1776), book collector:  sale (1776), lot 1570 ‘Herbarius maguntie impressis, cum fig. Colorat.’
William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased for £0.12.0 at the Ratcliffe sale;  see the annotated British Library copy of the sale catalogue.

Binding: 17th-century parchment with fore-edge cover extensions;  spine title written in ink (heavily worn and largely illegible).   Size:  214 x 151 mm.
Leaf size: 209 x 148 mm.
Annotations: Frequent marginal annotations in 16th and 17th-century hands;  frequent underlining and nota marks;  occasional manicules;  16th/17th-century index to the numbered woodcuts written on the blank page 1/4v and continuing onto the printed page 2/1r (f. 5r) - this index pre-dates the loss of the leaves detailed in Imperfections below;  number “854” in ink in a 17th/18th-century hand on front free endpaper, repeated in top right-hand corner of 1/1r;  large letter “C” perhaps in the same hand on front free endpaper;  faint pencil number “515” (18th century?) on 1/1r.
Decoration: Woodcuts coloured by hand.
Imperfections: Wanting quires 4, 5, 20 (i.e. ff. 21-36 and 149-156 containing woodcuts 17-32 and woodcuts 145-150);  also wanting 22/8 and 22/9 (ff. 172 and 173);  22/10 (f. 174) mutilated.
