Note: Loosely inserted is a page proof(?) of p. 23 from vol. 1 of Georges Arnaud de Ronsil, 'Mémoires de chirurgie, avec quelques remarques historiques sur l’état de la médicine & de la chirurgie en France & en Angleterre' (London:  Nourse, 1768), on the blank verso of which are manuscript notes in French on “hernie de naissance”.   Also loosely inserted (presumably as a bookmark) is the torn-off lower part of what appears to be the final page from an 18th-century English bookseller’s priced catalogue.

Binding: 16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards;  covers decorated with a blind roll within intersecting fillets to form a frame and a central panel;  the roll incorporates a portcullis, crown, lion, griffin, and branches of acorns;  the panel is divided by a fillet into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each filled with a separate stamp of fringed foliage;  remains of two clasps (catch plates on rear board);  surviving portions of spine covering decorated with two gold-tooled lozenge-shaped floral ornaments;  parchment manuscript strips with French text used to strengthen joints.  Size:  325 x 214 mm.
