Management Fundamentals Programme

The Management Fundamentals Programme provides an opportunity for participants to focus on building knowledge, understanding, and skills in a number of core areas of management.  Participants are likely to be first line managers fairly new to post or those likely to take on line management for others in the next 6-12 months.  The programme offers a holistic approach to management as well as the opportunity to build links with others across different areas of the University and is suitable for any job family.

The content of the programme will focus on equipping line managers to be successful in the following elements:

  • connecting to the organisation
  • managing the task and resources
  • managing your team
  • managing individual performance
  • managing and developing yourself

The components of the programme are:

  • pre-course reading and/or online learning for each workshop
  • a reflective activity following each workshop
  • an introduction to action learning sets, with the opportunity to continue with these at the end of the programme

Indicative commitment (based on a blended approach, whereby 2 modules are run face to face and 2 are delivered online via Zoom):

  • 3 days of workshop time (comprising 2 x 1 day face to face facilitated workshops at the beginning and end of the programme and 2 x 0.5 day sessions that are facilitated online)
  • around 1-2 hours of preparation comprising reading and reflective questions contained in a participant workbook which is shared in advance

Typically during the sessions, the facilitators will signpost other optional reading, courses and materials that are available to those interested.

This programme is offered throughout the year.  Colleagues who are interested in participating in a Cohort should have an initial discussion with their line manager and indicate their interest in coordination with their local People and OD (Human Resources) teams.
