Joseph Black Building refurbishment

Building info

Location: Joseph Black Building
Expected Completion Date: TBC
Size: 17,000m2
Cost: £34.2m
Architects: Atkins / Robertson Construction

The focus of this work is the repair and replacement of windows, stonework and brickwork, bringing the building back to its former glory.

Once works are complete the building should not only look better, but it will also be better insulated and sound proofed.

This work will take around three years to complete and will be phased to minimise the impact on students and staff. In addition to the external work, the University will also be refurbishing some laboratory space and improving fire safety in and around the stairs and corridors.

The current work to refurbish the external envelope, stairwells and corridors is just the first phase for the Joseph Black Building. The project team is currently scoping a second phase which will include roof replacement and rationalisation of roof services.

Forensic Medicine and Science are moving out of the Joseph Black Building and this area will be refreshed for use as a modern laboratory space.
