Published: 2 September 2026
The University of Glasgow hosted its annual Culture of Care Day on 2nd September 2026, celebrating excellence in animal welfare, 3Rs innovations, and collegiality across research and technical communities. The event brought together researchers, animal technologists, and veterinary staff for a programme featuring multi-species talks, interactive sessions, a poster competition, and a trade exhibition supported by sixteen industry sponsors.
On 2nd September 2026, the AWERB Culture of Care Committee welcomed delegates to the Advanced Research Centre for the University’s flagship annual event. Following opening remarks from Biological Services Director and the Committee Chair, the day featured presentations showcasing replacement, reduction, and refinement across diverse disciplines.
Speakers explored wild bird fieldwork, animal-computer interactions, insect nociception, surgical refinements in cattle, non-invasive imaging, and in vitro models including the fish-free SalmoSim platform. Guest speakers, MRC Harwell’s Michelle Stewart and Understanding Animal Research’s Chris Magee provided valuable perspectives on complex colony management and national policy.
Beyond the formal talks, attendees joined in a lively animal facts pub quiz and an energizing chair yoga session. The poster session highlighted innovative 3Rs projects from technical staff and early-career researchers, concluding with an award for best poster. Delegates also connected with sixteen leading industry exhibitors showcasing the latest advances in animal welfare, refinement, and facility equipment.
