Animal Welfare

Join the AWERB Culture of Care Committee

The AWERB Culture of Care Subgroup is currently inviting applications for new committee members

  • Human Welfare Representative
  • Animal Welfare Representative

Who can apply?

Anybody can apply, but we are especially keen to receive applications from PhD students and early-career researchers, who often have direct, hands-on involvement with animals in research and can offer valuable insights into daily practices and welfare considerations.

  • Human Welfare Representative. This role focuses on the health, wellbeing, and support of staff and students who work with animals in a research setting. Applicants should have an interest in creating a positive and supportive work culture.
  • Animal Welfare Representative. This role contributes to discussions and initiatives aimed at improving animal welfare and implementing the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) in research. Experience in animal research and a commitment to ethical standards are important for this position.

Note that these roles are not restrictive, committee members can, and often do, contribute across all Culture of Care topics. If you're passionate about improving the research environment, for both people and animals, we’d love to hear from you!

What’s in it for you?

Joining the Culture of Care Committee is a great opportunity to make a tangible impact on the welfare of both animals and staff involved in research. It also offers valuable insight into how ethical and welfare decisions are made at an institutional level. Committee experience is valued in both academic and non-academic career paths, making this a strong addition to your CV. You’ll also have the chance to network with staff across different disciplines and contribute to real improvements in research culture and practice.
