AI Prompts - the START framework
The START framework helps you assess whether and when AI should be incorporated into your tasks. It prompts reflection throughout the task life-cycle, helping you weigh the benefits and risks of AI integration while ensuring responsibility and accountability remain with you.
S - scope
Step 1
Investigate and analyse the task. Determine the ultimate goal and what a successful outcome looks like, then question whether AI is suitable to achieve it. Identify how you are delegating, is AI being used as a partner, or are you offloading your own skills?
T - think
Step 2
Consider the benefits and risks of using AI for the task, and determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks or conflicts. Vital considerations include the accuracy of the tool's output, the potential for bias, risks to data protection, and how these can be mitigated
A - ask
Step 3
Plan prompts ahead of using the tool to save time and reduce repeated prompting. Use the RTF method. Define the Role, Task and Format for the AI tool and provide specific context and constraints, maintaining GDPR compliance when sharing information
R - review
Step 4
After receiving output from the tool, review the material for correctness. Assess context, nuance and accuracy; check references for both their existence and the validity of claims; challenge biased material; and correct any errors using your own skills.
T - takeover
Step 5
Take ownership of any outputs made by AI tools that are disseminated. Disclose how the tool was used and justify the decisions and outcomes. AI tools cannot be used to make decisions, the user holds accountability and responsibility for the tool's outputs.
