Join us for this Friday Focus talk exploring Glasgow on Paper, The Hunterian’s contribution to Glasgow 850 — the year-long celebration marking the city’s 850th anniversary.
Currently on view in the Hunterian Art Gallery, this display is part of our regular rotation of works on paper, which changes three times a year to showcase the depth and variety of the collection.
Spanning more than two centuries, the selection brings together views and impressions of Glasgow by a wide range of artists — from anonymous engravers to well-known figures such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, James Kay, and Willie Rodger. Together, these works offer an opportunity to reflect on the city’s many facets: industrial and romantic, gritty and graceful, historic and ever-changing.
The talk will explore how artists have captured, celebrated, and often offered a very personal take on the city’s rich and sometimes contradictory identity — revealing a city that continues to inspire creativity and debate in equal measure.
