Friday Focus - Updating the Taxonomy of the Zoology Museum
It has been 35 years since most of the current Zoology Museum displays were installed, it is not surprising then that many of the labels are now out of date. The number of described species has increased significantly, and new discoveries have changed our view of the ‘Tree of Life’. Join us in this online discussion as we explore a new update to species labelling in the Hunterian Zoology Museum.

It has been 35 years since most of the current Zoology Museum displays were installed, it is not surprising then that many of the labels are now out of date. The number of described species has increased significantly, and new discoveries have changed our view of the ‘Tree of Life’.
This talk by Mike G. Rutherford, Hunterian Curator of Zoology & Anatomy, will introduce the subject of taxonomy, and then look at a new project that provides the correct information without having to redesign the displays. This consists of adding a series of labels with QR codes that link to webpages for each of the major animal phyla or orders. This will be followed by highlighting some of the lesser-known animal groups, including those which aren’t in the displays, and at the end there will be a surprise taxonomical video for your entertainment!
Friday Focus is an online talks series hosted by The Hunterian, University of Glasgow. Each session features a different speaker, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, research and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian.
The talks take place at 1pm over Zoom, and are 25 minutes long with time for questions afterwards. Recordings of the sessions will be made available on our YouTube channel.
