Our latest rotation of works on paper features a selection of drawings, prints, watercolours and pastels by Scottish artists.

The works have been chosen to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Royal Scottish Academy, celebrating the contribution these artists have made to the development of Scottish art.

The artists featured all studied at the Glasgow School of Art and most were elected to the Royal Scottish Academy, an independent, artist-run institution dedicated to promoting and supporting contemporary Scottish art and architecture.

Highlights include works by Mary Armour, Duncan Shanks, James Paterson, George Henry, William Crosbie and Robert Colquhoun.

The rotation also explores printmaking and includes a selection of engraver’s tools alongside the etching and etching plate for Ian Fleming’s Rock Pool II.

The works are interspersed throughout the Hunterian Art Gallery main gallery, offering fresh dialogues with our permanent displays. Entry is free. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 10.00am–5.00pm.

Works on Paper Rotations

The Hunterian’s collection of works on paper is one of the largest in Scotland. With more than 30,000 items, it represents one of the great strengths of our art holdings.

Spanning drawings, prints and watercolours from the 15th century to the present day, the collection brings together works by artists ranging from Rembrandt to Picasso, and Matisse to Mackintosh.

Because works on paper are sensitive to light, we limit the time they are on display to protect them for future generations. To share more of this collection with our communities, we’ve introduced regular rotations which offer the chance to explore more stories and perspectives.

Every few months, different works replace the selection on display, creating fresh opportunities to discover something new on each visit.
