The Muonophone is a singular instrument that translates atmospheric radiation into immersive sound and light. Using specialised detectors, the device senses muons—harmless particles born from cosmic rays—and converts their energy into a real-time sensory experience. These particles are the echoes of violent intergalactic events, from exploding stars to colliding galaxies.

Created by Lomond Campbell in collaboration with David Mahon and the University of Glasgow, the project evolved into the multimedia show MŮO, which saw a sold-out run at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe. Presented here as an installation, the Muonophone invites audiences to connect with the invisible forces of the cosmos.

To hear a special kick-off performance and talk from the creators of the Muonophone, you can also join us on April 7 at 17:30 for Songs from the Cosmos.
