What is Making Music Your Career?
After the success of the Making Music Your Career student conference in 2021/2022, Making Music Your Career is now a series run by Music in the University, partnered with Academic Music, the QMU and our professional music industries in Scotland. It offers talks, panels, interviews, and workshops by industry professionals to give an insight in to:
- Jobs you can get across the many faceted areas of music industries in Scotland and beyond
- Skills or training you need to work in different roles
- General assistance in preparing music based CVs, applying for funding
- Where to look for work
- Advice and the inside scoop on the different industries and roles within them
- Direct connection with people working in the industries, including UofG graduates
Who are these events for?
These events are open to ANYONE who is considering a career in music, regardless of their current study, experience or work. There are limited spaces for each event due to room capacities, so please book a free space!
When do events happen?
Each event will be posted here on the UofG Events website, with a link to book a free space. Please ensure you have booked a space so we can follow up with any resources after the session. They take place on selected Mondays from 4.30pm - 6.00pm.
Where do events happen?
The events take place in either the Cafe (ground floor), or the Bar (first floor) at the Queen Margaret Union on University Gardens, opposite the James McCune Smith Building. You can take the lift up to the Bar if needed.
Why are we offering this series?
The UK music industries are multi-faceted and often disconnected from each other. Understanding how they work, the roles they offer, and how to get one, is really confusing and can result in people missing out on amazing work opportunities or experiences they didn't know existed. We hope to change this and safeguard our future workforce.
Music in the University is a core part of UofG's public engagement offering. We are the bridge between the academic course, communities and industry partners. It is part of our role to offer opportunities, experiences and insights for our students, staff and wider community. This series is now a key part of our programme, and aims to ensure that we do our part in helping the future of music in Scotland and beyond to thrive. Through helping educate people in the inside workings of our multifaceted music industries, job roles available and how to access paid work in it, we hope to continue to assist building a strong future workforce who are equipped with the skills and network with which to build thriving music industries.
