This session will provide an overview of work conducted in 2015 into the experiences of academics in leadership positions and what they wished they had known at the beginning.  The session will be interactive and will also explore the issues involved when academics are required to demonstrate leadership but have no formal position of authority or line management.  The session will involve a discussion about potential opportunities for enhancement that may result from these activities.

By the end of the session, participants should:

  1. Be able to identify the challenges and opportunities involved in academic leadership positions
  2. And be able to seek out opportunities of leadership that will lead to their own professional development 

Speaker information 

Professor Fiona Denney is Professor of Business Education in the Brunel Business School, Brunel University London.  Prior to this she was the Director of the Brunel Educational Excellence Centre, Brunel University London which supported learning and teaching enhancement for both staff and students and from 2007 – 2014, the Assistant Director of the Graduate School, King’s College London.  Fiona is the Honorary Secretary of the UK Council for Graduate Education, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).  Fiona has a PhD in marketing and has held academic posts in marketing and management studies.  Since 2003, Fiona has worked in academic staff and researcher development and she now has research interests in the area of academic leadership.
