GCEC Seminar: Towards submarine landslides and their consequences

Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre
Date: Thursday 22 November 2018

Venue: Rankine Building: 514
Category: Academic events
Speaker: Dr. Xue Zhang

The simulation of submarine landslides and their consequences has been a long-standing challenge. This is majorly owing to the strong coupling among sliding sediments, seawater and infrastructure as well as the induced extreme material deformation. In this talk, a novel continuum approach – the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) will be introduced with emphasis on its capability for stability analysis of submarine slopes. It will be shown that the complete process of potential submarine slope failure can be predicted in a single simulation using this approach with the direct threat to a nearby pipeline and indirect threat by generating tsunami being estimated.
