Short Description
This is a mandatory course in Semester 2 of the MSc programme in Epidemiology of Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance (EIDAR). Building on the course Fundamentals of AMR, the course examines approaches to preventing and reducing AMR, including interventions, policy, regulation and broader societal considerations. National and international examples are used to illustrate different approaches to addressing AMR across diverse settings.

Assessment
1. Performance during a debate or other form of oral presentation (ILO 1,2,3). The debate involves a group presentation (10 mins) followed by discussion (in a debate style) with a second group (15 mins). Students will receive an individual grade based on both group and individual performance. (25%)
2. Oral presentation with question time (5 mins presentation, 5 mins question and answer time; ILOs 4, 5, 6). (25%)
3. Written assignment proposing an epidemiological study (2,000 words; ILOs 4,5, 6). (50%)
Course Aims
The course aims to build on the foundational knowledge of AMR from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective by developing an understanding of the mitigation strategies that can be taken towards preventing and reducing the development and spread of AMR. This is embedded in awareness of societal aspects surrounding AMR and of some of the tensions that may exist between public and/or private interests regarding the use of antimicrobials. Students will gain relevant skills towards the design of AMR-related research. Overall, this course will enhance students' conceptual, analytical and intellectual skills.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate and compare evidence and drivers underpinning policy documentation, regulations and legislation regarding antimicrobial use at national and/or international levels.
2. Critically appraise the roles of evidenced based scientific data and advocacy-based information as they pertain to underpinning policy and/or legislation writing.
3. Plan and formulate arguments for defending and/or rebuffing a particular stance involving the epidemiology of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
4. Critically assess scientific literature to recognise key knowledge gaps and/or research priorities to formulate a research hypothesis/question.
5. Plan a study that is suitable, robust, feasible and has the potential to influence AMR-related local, regional or global policies.
6. Evaluate the suitability of different types of study design, critically discussing the issues or limitations.
