Short Description
This course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be able to play a leading technical or managerial role within the engineering industry, fully cognisant of the commercial, regulatory and ethical considerations affecting your work.
Timetable
■ The first two sessions of the course are delivered as substantive workshops; scheduled at the beginning of the semester
■ subsequent lectures are distributed at regular intervals over the following weeks
■ industrial visits and subsequent tutorials are scheduled in the middle and latter half of the course
■ Students will work in groups for the purposes of the case studies / tutorials

Students must have completed Engineering and Professional Management Skills 1.

Assessment
Case-study assignments (70%), based on the industrial visits.
Individual oral presentation (30%), drawing on information within one of the case-study assignments.
Course Aims
This course aims to equip students with the professional skills and theoretical understandings to work effectively in a leadership, management and/or technical capacity within an industrial setting.
In semester two, we will focus on
1. Working within a team and ways of developing high performing teams
2. Matters of ethics and professional conduct as they relate to the engineering industry
3. Macro and microeconomic considerations
4. Operations management, in which you will learn about the tools, techniques and frameworks that you can use to manage, analyse and improve processes
Whilst in semester three, we will focus on:
5. Human resource management, in which you will learn how to maximise productivity through effective people management
6. Marketing and the importance of a customer-focused approach
7. Business planning: drawing on earlier learning, we look at how you would go about developing and implementing a new business idea, developing a business model and designing financial and operational plans.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the Engineering Management and Professional Skills 1, students will be able to:
1. describe the critical success factors associated with a high performing team and appreciate their own preferences when working within a team;
2. identify and propose solutions to key ethical dilemmas facing an engineering professional;
3. identify the key macro and microeconomic factors that influence the performance and development of a commercial engineering-based organisation;
4. apply key concepts in operations management, including supply chain management, service management, quality management, risk and resilience.
