Short Description

This course introduces students to the commercial and regulatory context as it relates to the engineering profession, addressing matters of:

■ Commercial context for product and service development

■ Professional ethics

■ Commercial law

■ Project management and finance

 

Students will learn about the structure and organisation of companies and the ways in which they drive product and service innovation and development. Students will also consider issues of ethics and law as they relate to engineering professionals. In the last part of the course, students will be introduced to some key tools for project planning and risk management.

 

Through the consideration of case studies, students will acquire a broader understanding of the role of an engineer within a commercial setting.

Assessment

Assessment will take the form of a group assignment, in which students work together to prepare a costed proposal for a new product innovation, associated project plan and risk register.

Course Aims

This course introduces students to the practice of engineering within commercial and regulatory environments.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Describe how an organisation might typically go about developing innovative and sustainable engineering products and services.

2. Apply key concepts and principles from ethics, law, product development and marketing in an engineering context.

3. Create a simple project plan, showing interactions and dependencies and describing the critical path.

4. Compare and contrast the methods of managing risk and prepare a simple risk register.
