Short Description

This will develop students' understanding of the laws of physics that underpin engineering and will instil fundamental experimental skills, including the use of some scientific instruments, the analysis of uncertainties of measurements and the fundamental methods for data processing.

Laboratory 40% - 4 experiments and reports

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

 

Due to the nature of the coursework and sequencing of courses, it is not possible to reassess the coursework or laboratory experiments.

The initial grade on coursework will be used when calculating the resit grade.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to develop students' abilities to follow proper procedures to accomplish scientific experiments, including the analysis of sources of error, and the computation and proper reporting of uncertainties. In doing this, students will develop a solid understanding of physical laws, in preparation for future courses in engineering.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ safely use a range of experimental apparatus;

■ efficiently record and process experimental data;

■ explain the statistical properties of random and systematic errors and their effects on experimental results;

■ construct pertinent graphical representations of experimental data.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must be present in 3 scheduled labs or a grade of credit withheld will be given.

Prelab work for each lab must be submitted before entering the lab room or no grade will be given.
