This course will introduce those with very little or no previous knowledge of Greek to the forms and structure of the language of the New Testament, enabling them to read selected passages of scripture and to explore the value of being able to do so.

3x1hr session per week over 20 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus. 2 hours of individual project supervision TBA. To be co-taught with TRS1004.

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Theology and Religious Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes who qualify under the University's 25% regulation.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Short homework exercises consisting of language manipulation or translation - best 15 of these will be averaged - 10%

■ Project (2,000 words) - 40%

■ Examination (90 minutes duration) - 50%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ introduce students to key concepts in the study of Greek language;

■ familiarise students with the basic features of the forms and structure of Greek as used in the New Testament;

■ equip students with a basic Greek vocabulary targeted at reading the New Testament;

■ encourage students to reflect upon the value of an ability to read the New Testament in Greek.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ read and understand basic New Testament Greek translate simple unseen passages from the New Testament into English;

■ translate an agreed passage of the New Testament with comment on why they have chosen to translate as they do;

■ reflect critically upon the insights they gain from reading the New Testament in Greek as opposed to in translation;

■ apply this reflection to their experience of translating an agreed passage from the New Testament.
