This course provides the basic knowledge needed to read the Old Testament in the original Hebrew.

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to cover the basics of Classical (Biblical) Hebrew sufficiently to enable independent reading of narrative materials in the Hebrew Bible.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ demonstrate knowledge of basic Hebrew grammar and vocabulary and the ability to read simple passages, seen and unseen.

■ demonstrate competence in basic translation into idiomatic English with the use of a Hebrew dictionary.

■ demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on social, historical, theological, gendered, political and literary aspects of issues involved with reading and translating texts from the Hebrew Bible in general, and in particular parts of Genesis

■ demonstrate the ability to use both primary and secondary sources.

■ demonstrate communication, analytic, creative and problem-solving skills through translation.

■ demonstrate organisational and oral presentation skills through class work, and the ability to work with others on some homework projects.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
