This course introduces Scottish Theatre and its various histories, geographies, politics and practices. It seeks to support students to understand and locate themselves within the ecology in which Scottish Theatre takes place, exploring key examples of Scottish theatre practice, including the national, popular, political and experimental.

10 x 2-hour seminar sessions as scheduled on MyCampus plus two field trips (2x5hrs) to local theatre companies/venues.

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Theatre Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes.

 The standard assessments for this course are: 

■ 4 x blog posts of 500 words each (2,000 words) -50% 

■ 1 x 20-minute group presentation on a proposal for a Scottish Theatre Event - 50% 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available: 

■ There is no alternative to the Blog post, but extensions to the deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustment (Students should follow the usual process for extensions). 

■ There are alternatives to the Group Presentation. Students can document their individual contribution to the presentation, and there is no requirement for individuals to present live, Or, students may complete an individual presentation instead of the group presentation, or submit a recorded presentation (7 minutes). 

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.  

This course aims to:

■ Explore and understand the varied geographies, histories, and practices of Scottish Theatre.

■ Provide students with knowledge of key concepts and debates in relation to the concept and practices of Scottish Theatre.

■ Introduce students to key practitioners, texts and theatrical forms from across Scottish Theatre's history.

■ Develop students research and analytical skills to examine Scottish Theatre practices both historically and currently, and to consider its potential futures.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Investigate and assess the multiple traditions, forms and practices which constitute Scottish Theatre, historically and in the present

■ Identify and analyse the local, national and international dimensions of Scottish Theatre's development

■ Collaborate on the production of a research-driven proposal that responds to Scotland's diverse communities

■ Synthesise scholarly and artistic sources in presenting their ideas clearly and concisely in written and spoken forms
