This course will build on the work of the Level 2 Language class and develop in depth and breadth students' proficiency in spoken and written Russian as well as allowing students to gain a detailed understanding of certain texts and topics chosen from the available Honours options.

3 x 1 hour classes weekly over both semesters as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly seminars for two Honours options as scheduled on MyCampus.

Teaching will take place in weeks 1-5 and 7-11. Week 6 will be dedicated to guided independent study. 

Russian 2 (RUSSIAN2001) at Grade D or better.

The standard assessments for this course are: 

■ Written Exam (2 hours) - 25%

■ Oral Exam (15mins) - 12.5%

■ Assessed language exercises (throughout semester 1 & 2) - 12.5%

■ The other assessment for this course will be calculated from the assessed work for the agreed Honours options taken as part of this course (50%)

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available: 

■ There is no alternative to the Written Examination, but extra time and/or a separate room may be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments). 

■ Invigilated online oral exam.

■ There is no alternative to the Assessed Language Exercises but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions). 

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.  

It is the default expectation that all courses will offer opportunities for reassessment or deferred assessment. Where it is not possible to offer this in some assessment components, the grade achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade, and any exceptions for this course are described below.

This course aims to:

■ further expand students' existing knowledge of the target language already acquired at level 2;

■ ensure students can understand, read, write and speak the target language at post-intermediate level, which is broadly equivalent to B2/C1 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;

■ ensure students can use the target language with ease in everyday situations and professional environments;

■ allow students to gain a detailed understanding of topics chosen from the available Options;

■ develop students' skills in presenting a formal analysis of the topics studied in the Options - refer to specifications of individual options for full course aims.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

■ read, comprehend, analyse and translate intermediate-level and some advanced level texts of a variety of styles in the target language;

■ speak with confidence and present ideas effectively in the target language on a range of topics reflecting work done on the course, using appropriate register, intonation, and a wide range of structures and idioms;

■ respond accurately and with confidence to questions posed both orally and in writing, using advanced grammatical structures of the target language accurately and appropriately;

■ produce texts written in the target language that show an active command of vocabulary, grammar and idiom at an advanced level reflecting the work contained in the course materials;

■ fully satisfy the ILOs of their chosen Options - refer to specifications of individual options for full course ILOs.
